Bariatric Psychological Evaluation
Bariatric surgery is a life-changing tool for managing obesity and associated conditions. The two most common surgeries offered today are the sleeve gastrectomy and the roux-en-Y gastric bypass (RYGB).
Having a psychological evaluation is a routine requirement prior to surgery. With obesity being a chronic, relapsing, multifactorial disease, the process of recovery, lifestyle change, and optimal weight loss outcomes after surgery can be greatly impacted by mental health and behavior, as well as social and environmental factors.
The goal of this evaluation is to ensure that you are well-informed about the surgery process and requirements, and to identify any potential concerns that may affect your candidacy for surgery.
Dr. Kelemen offers bariatric pre-surgery evaluations via telehealth for your convenience.
What Will My Evaluation Consist Of?
The evaluation process is designed to be thorough and supportive every step of the way.
Step 01
Initial Consultation
The process typically starts with a brief conversation about how you were referred, as well as your timeline along the bariatric surgery path. Dr. Kelemen will discuss the specific referral or collateral information needed.
Step 02
Pre-Evaluation
Before your evaluation, Dr. Kelemen will need a referral from your bariatric surgeon or team. Dr. Kelemen may also request additional information from your providers. Additionally, you may be asked to complete some questionnaires before your first visit.
Step 03
Evaluation
The evaluation is usually completed in one 60-90min visit. This will consist of discussing relevant information such as your weight history, mental health and medical history, and eating habits, as well as your understanding of the risks and benefits of surgery. You may also be asked to complete questionnaires as needed.
Step 04
Feedback
Dr. Kelemen discusses the conclusions and recommendations at the end of the evaluation. After your comprehensive report is completed (usually within a week), it is sent directly to your bariatric surgery team or referring provider.

Will Insurance Cover My Evaluation?
Bear Path Psychology and Wellness, L.L.C. is currently out-of-network. However, if you have insurance, you may have out-of-network mental health benefits. While reimbursement is not guaranteed, Dr. Kelemen can provide a "superbill" which you can submit to your insurance company.
Is this a pass/fail kind of evaluation?
Rest assured, this is not a pass/fail evaluation. The purpose of this evaluation is to help prepare you and enhance your candidacy for surgery. Many individuals are unconditionally cleared for surgery. However, not everybody is ready for surgery at the time of their first evaluation, and that is OK. It is very common to extend the process in order to give you the time you need to address any specific concerns.
